PETRA ‘72
Formed in 1972, Petra is regarded as the most influential band of the Christian rock genre and a pioneer of the counterculture Jesus Movement. Myrrh Records owner Billy Ray Hearn signed Petra to their first recording contract and stated that Petra was "the most radical thing around ... as far out as anything that had come out until that time.”
The anthem "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" was among the songs on their second album. The song was immediately controversial – and revolutionary. "It was the boldest statement anyone in Christian music had made until then," said Ambassador Artist Agency president Wes Yoder. "
Through 50+ years of music, Petra has garnered 4 GRAMMY® awards, 13 Dove Awards, and was the first rock band inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
